Steve Murphy

Before co-founding MURPHY PUTNAM MEDIA in 1996, Steve had worked with Mark Putnam for seven years as a senior associate and partner with the Democratic political media firm Fenn-King-Murphy-Putnam Communications.

Steve has also managed or worked on over twenty political campaigns across the United States, dating back to the 1976 Carter presidential campaign. From January 2003 through January 2004, Steve served as Campaign Manager for Dick Gephardt for President. Steve has been profiled by both the New York Times Magazine and NBC Nightly News for the roles he has played in presidential campaigns.

Steve graduated from the University of Delaware and served two years as a VISTA volunteer on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. His political experience includes serving as Campaign Manager for Wilson Goode’s 1983 campaign for Mayor of Philadelphia when he became that city’s first African-American mayor. Mr. Murphy also managed Congressman Richard Gephardt’s winning Iowa presidential caucus campaign in 1988. At the close of 1988, Steve was named a Democratic MVP by the Almanac of Presidential Politics.

Steve also has extensive experience on Capitol Hill, having served as Congressman Gephardt’s Administrative Assistant, and as the Executive Director of the House Democratic Caucus under both Congressman Gephardt and Congressman Bill Gray. Steve managed Congressman Gray’s successful campaign for House Budget Committee Chair in 1984 while serving as his Washington office Chief of Staff.

Steve resides in Falls Church, Virginia with his wife Lori Lafave and their son Cian and daughter Ceara. Steve also has a daughter, Deirdre, and a son, Eugene, from a previous marriage.
